The Bethany Negash Memorial Foundation is a non­profit organization that provides educational resources for children. It needed of a web presence to extend its reach to its target audience and to keep its members abreast of current news and issues. The team was responsible to analyze the client’s needs and develop a mobile friendly website and application.

"I view this project as the most helpful of all the courses in my degree program and career. Capstone has taught me more about myself and how to interact with others and how the real world work environment might be like."

JSON has been used widely these days for data exchange and even storage. New data management systems beyond SQL (NoSQL, or Not Only SQL) have been developed to handle semi-structure and unstructured data. In this project, the team was charged with implementing a MongoDB database of Google Books data that will be used in a new course. The team exported the data using Google Books API, cleaned and loaded the data to a MongoDB database, and complete various data processing and administration tasks. A web-based application was also developed to demonstrate the use of MongoDB use in web applications.

The IT department started an initiative to track graduates' placement and career information. The idea was to retrieve the data from LinkedIn, store them in a custom designed database, and produce queries and reports. A team of students have researched the LinkedIn profile APIs and data structure, designed a relational database, and entered the data. They also conducted some analysis and created reports to address the department need.

Mobile computing has had a huge impact on many applications including healthcare applications, for example, Medsphere OpenVista. The usability of these mobile healthcare applications has been a major issue in software design and adoption. In this project, the team helped research and develop a heuristic based evaluation system and methodology to compare and study the usability of major open source EHR system on mobile devices.

Fall 2015 IT Capstone Projects

Amazon Data Analysis - https://sites.google.com/site/amazoncapstone

One of the retailers wanted to study the fashion market in USA though Amazon. The company needed to gather product data provided by Amazon and conduct some analysis. The team was charged to gather the data through the Amazon Product Advertising APIs, design a database to store the data, and develop a web application for queries and reports.

"(This capstone project) really allows the collaboration between school and business. I can see it will work out great for some proof of concept projects for businesses. Will do it again." Commented by the project sponsor.

Log files are commonly used to log computer operations and activities. It has become increasingly important to trace these operations and understand them through data analysis. In this project, students researched and analyzed college of computing (CCSE)’s website log data (2 years) using the Elastic platform including Logstash, Elasticsearch, and Kibana.

“I have completely enjoyed this project. This project [ignites the] start of a long term research on applying log processing towards analyzing security and privacy breaches.” Commented by the project owner. The project was accepted for presentation at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research 2016.

Forsyth county schools is a K-12 education system that serves over 42,600 students in 35 schools, the seventh largest school system in Georgia. It is the largest employer in the Forsyth County with over 4,300 full-time employees and 1,300 substitutes. FCS wanted to provide a simple personal website hosting solution to its employees and students, with integrated login using the current Active Directory system. A team was charged to study FCS needs, recommend, and implement a solution. The final solution was implemented on WordPress.

The project received highest evaluation from the project sponsor among all projects.

Open Source EHR - http://ehrcapstone.blogspot.com 

Open source electronic health records (EHR) adoption has been increased significantly in rural and community health centers typically providing health care to low-income and underserved communities. The objectives of this research project are threefold. First, investigate the current state of open source, the newly emerging technologies in open source specifically related to EHR. Second, analyze at least three open source EHR software and use all of them to implement a few given clinical processes respectively. Third, compare the software customization processes and make a recommendation on how to select and implement open-source EHR.

The project resulted in a KSU CETL Incentive Funding Awards for Research and Creative Activity 2015.

http://www.rethompsontravel.com is a website for travel services. The current website needed a number of improvements including a user interface upgrade. The student team studied the current site and designed a better UI. The change was measured  based on Google Analytics.

Summer 2015 IT Capstone Projects

CCSE Billboard https://sites.google.com/site/spsubillboard/

College of Computing and Software Engineering needed to set up a dynamic TV Billboard outside the dean's office to present content to the public. The content might include news, marketing, events, announcements, etc. The team was tasked to research the needs of the college, compare solutions, and design/implement the recommended solution. The team chose and implement the solution based on NoviSign, a cloud-based Digital Signage system.

College of Computing and Software Engineering needed to set up a secure file sharing system for the college to satisfy the needs of all college stakeholders (faculty, admin, staff, students, guest, etc.). A student team was charged to implement a Windows Server based solution, and also conducted security and risk analysis of the system. The student team has created a proof-of-concept prototype on the experiment site (virtual machines).
